Overview
Temescal is a dynamic neighborhood in North Oakland known for its diverse community and vibrant atmosphere. The neighborhood has experienced a resurgence in recent years. Telegraph Avenue (between 40th and 51st streets) is lined with an eclectic mix of restaurants, cafes, boutiques, and art galleries.
Housing reflects pre-war duplexes and bungalows (California Craftsman style dominates), Victorian homes, modern condominiums, and apartment buildings. The neighborhood was founded in 1870—early origins stretch back to horse stables, now renovated into charming Temescal Alley shops. Artists from California College of the Arts have long been drawn by relatively affordable bungalows and creative community.
The food scene explodes with nationally recognized destinations. Burdell, named Food & Wine's Best Restaurant in America, offers nostalgic soul food from James Beard Finalist Chef Geoff Davis. MICHELIN-rated restaurants include FOB Kitchen (vibrant Filipino food), Tacos Oscar (impressive tacos), and Bird & Buffalo (authentic casual Thai). Smokin' Woods BBQ brings Texas-style smoke. Homeroom specializes in mac and cheese. Burma Superstar Oakland has served Burmese classics since 1992. Pizzaiolo creates wood-fired Neapolitan pizzas. TallBoy operates as a craft beer haven. Wise Sons brings Jewish deli favorites. Kingfish serves Southern-inspired cuisine. Cholita Linda offers fresh Latin American food. Marufuku Ramen serves Hakata-style tonkotsu and extra-intense chicken paitan ramen. Chimmelier opened with acclaimed Korean fried chicken. Curbside Creamery scoops unique ice cream. Forma operates as bakery and coffee shop. Brenda's runs a fast casual cafe with New Orleans-inspired dishes.
Temescal Alley—converted horse stables—now houses boutique shops and eateries in a pedestrian-friendly, bohemian setting. The neighborhood hosts community events including the annual Taste of Temescal restaurant walk in April.
Transit access includes multiple AC Transit bus lines. Lake Temescal offers peaceful birding, fishing, walking, picnicking, and swimming. Temescal Creek Park provides local green space.
Temescal draws the young, hip crowd. Storefronts along tree-shaded Telegraph and Shattuck are mostly new-gen, dedicated to the art of one thing. It's the kind of neighborhood where you can walk to Ethiopian food, Filipino cuisine, Burmese classics, and the best burger in Oakland—all within a few blocks.
